First, Second, and Third Class FAA Medical Exams
FAA medical certificate classes are tied to the pilot privileges you exercise. A student or private pilot often needs a third class medical, many commercial pilots need a second class medical, and airline transport pilot privileges require a first class medical.
First class medical
A first class medical is required when exercising airline transport pilot privileges. It uses the most demanding FAA medical standards, and first class applicants may have additional testing requirements such as an ECG based on age.
Second class medical
A second class medical is generally used for commercial pilot privileges. The standards are still strict, but the operational use case is different from first class airline transport privileges.
Third class medical
A third class medical is common for student, private, and recreational flying. It is the entry point for many pilots, but the same preparation rules apply: complete MedXPress accurately and bring records for any disclosed history.
Choosing an AME by class
When searching for an AME, filter by class if you know what you need. If you are unsure, ask your instructor, employer, or the AME office before the appointment.
Find a first, second, or third class AME
Use the AME class filter to find Aviation Medical Examiners for the medical certificate you need.
